The Woman of Philippine Democracy

Share it Please
I woke up today with a special of "In Memory of President Cory" airing on TV. This bad news made my morning a gloomy one (adding to the cold day). President Cory died at exactly 3:18 am today due to cardio respiratory arrest.

Former President Cory Aquino was the ordinary housewife of Senator Ninoy Aquino (assassinated during the Martial Law) who made it to Malacanang Palace. She was the one who stripped the reign of dictatorship from the late President Ferdinand Marcos and restored our democratic freedom. She was also the first woman president of the Philippines and the first woman leader in Asia. Her campaign symbol is the color yellow. President Aquino was featured in Time magazine for her leadership during the People Power revolution amidst the last days of Martial Law. As President, she experienced 9 coup d'etat attempts but she was able to face them and completed her six-year term as President. A woman with a firm belief to the Lord who used the rosary as her weapon against the struggles before and during her administration.

Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with colon cancer last May 2009. She received treatment for the illness but was returned to the hospital last June and never went out of it.

I encourage not only the Filipinos but everyone who is reading this blog to pray for her soul. Thank you Tita Cory for the freedom we are experiencing today. To the icon of Philippine democracy, I am proud to be called a Filipino!
